Petitions, Petitions, Petitions.................

http://cullenboysanonymous.com/was-breaking-dawn-the-book-r-rated-and-should-the-movie-be

Oh Lordy, what will the fans think of next? In a world that is falling apart in so many places and a petition for peace would be so much more appropriate, what do we find: a petition calling for an R rating on the yet to be made movie Breaking Dawn. I'm really trying to get a prospective on it.

"It is understood that not only is Breaking Dawn rated R in the book, the director should produce a film that mirrors it’s book in original form that is greatly loved by females (and some males) all over the world. Losing major details of the movie will definitely hurt the release of Breaking Dawn and disappoint fans everywhere."

So I'm thinking to myself was the book really an R rated book? I mean, I've read it three times at least and I'm still pouring through my memory of it to find one scene that could be R rated save for the birthing scene and that only counts if all horror movies are rated R. And in that case could that one scene make this an R rated picture in the sense of say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I don't think so. I mean sure, Bella ralphs blood like Linda Blair ralphed pea soup in the Exorcist and the baby chews its way out not unlike the monster baby in (can't remember the title, but remember the last scene) punches its fist through its mother's abdominal wall to the horror of it's parents, but seriously an R rating?

While the birthing scene is graphic in nature, the target audience (teens) have read the book, and though I've heard more than one go "ick" at the whole description of it, not one stopped reading the book because of it. A little blood should not an R rated movie make. It is pivotal as it is the beginning of the coming out party for Bella, the vampire and is necessary to the story, but I believe can be handled in such a way that no R rating has to be stamped on the whole picture. I mean a little blood is better than watching Alice rip James' head from his body in Twilight. I watched my own son ralph blood in my front yard after returning from wisdom teeth extractions, but I wouldn't say it was R rated. Sometimes, depending on the circumstance, it is natural. The story itself is based on blood lust and this family of vampires ability to resist the human type, so I just don't see this part as R rated. I'm not a big fan of gross or ick, but if it is necessary to the story then figure a way to do it that satisfies the rating board to let it remain PG-13 just like the rest of the films. It ain't rocket science for crying out loud.

I really think what these bozo's are looking for is more graphics from Isle Esme. A bruised Bella is graphic enough for me. I've replayed those scenes in my head a million times and while SM put a great deal of time in getting the seduction scene written right, I can't find an R rated nano second in any of it. The readers imagination is what makes this scene hot. Semi-nude scenes appear in many PG-13 movies. Remember, Remember Me. Implied, but not shown. Nowhere in the book does it say "Edward and Bella do the bunny dance." So if it is more graphic love scenes they are wanting well the material just isn't there. However, I'd love to see the headboard ripped and feathers flying.

The target audience for these books were the teens and the outward ideas of how these movies should be done right didn't appear until we "adults" read the series and decided what we wanted in all the films. Franky, I don't want to take my granddaughter to an R rated film. I want to enjoy the last film (or films) with her as I enjoyed the previous films. These books were ultimately dedicated to her age group and should remain dedicated to the group that made the mania what it is. Without those teens, what would our knowledge of the books and movies be?

So, in my very humble opinion, this last movie(s) should be given the PG-13 rating treatment and not turned into a veritable blood bath. Now let's see what Summit wants. I just want a good movie.

  1. I believe the movie where the baby punches its way out of its mom is called Gremlins. And then I think Spaceballs had a scene like that at the end where the thing that came out of the stomach ended up doing a little song and dance on the counter.

  2. love this posting! I second this. We still have our personal visions of what these excerpts are as described in the book - the subtlety that SM uses can be transferred to screen without going all graphic. This can be done!
